Penang Malaysian Cuisine in Chamblee was recently closed following a second failing health score.
The inspector found a bag of decomposed meat, a bag of slimy and rotted mushrooms and a moldy cucumber in the walk-in cooler. The meat was so far gone the inspector couldn’t tell what it was.
An over-ripe banana that had turned mushy was stored on top of uncovered cabbage in another cooler. All of these food items were discarded.
The inspector said old newspapers were being used to drain fried shallots.
A quart bottle of insecticide was stored on a prep table in the wait station next to clean plates for the customers.
Penang Malaysian Cuisine, 4897 Buford Highway, scored 46/U on the routine inspection. The restaurant had a 64/U on a previous routine inspection before pulling the score up to 77/C on the follow-up.
In other code violations, several food items in coolers and others left out on the counter were at unsafe temperatures and were discarded. Temperature time controls were not documented for some items, so the staff voluntarily threw away 25 spring rolls and about four pounds of shredded chicken.
Excessive food residue was found on surfaces, equipment and utensils that had been cleaned, the inspector said. Several butcher knives in use had rusty or chipped blades.
Points were also taken off for improper storage in a cooler. Raw pork was directly above raw vegetables, and duck eggs were on a shelf above uncovered Chinese broccoli. The pork and eggs were relocated.
Numerous food containers were left uncovered throughout the coolers.
Penang Malaysian Cuisine will be re-inspected.
