At First Watch restaurant in Snellville, two containers of kale tonic prepared on site for the juice bar had not cooled down to at least 41 degrees within a four-hour time limit. Also, multiple potentially hazardous cold foods were at unsafe temperatures in a prep cooler.
All of the food and the fresh kale juice were discarded.
The Gwinnett County health inspector said employees were not using an effective cooling method for the containers of kale that were in the cooler.
First Watch, 1830 Scenic Highway North, failed the routing inspection with a 51/U. Its previous scores were 95/A and 92/A.
During the inspection, multiple plates, metal pans and cooking utensils in the clean dish area were still dirty with food debris. The dishes were rewashed.
The ice machine was dirty with a mold-like substance.
Points were also taken off because employee personal items, such as shoes, purses and coats, were stored with the table linens. Employees had personal beverages near clean dishes at the dish-washing station.
And some employees were wearing fitness bands and rubber bracelets while preparing food.
First Watch will be re-inspected.
Another Gwinnett County restaurant also saw its health score fall following a routine inspection.
Crepes Square, 80 Horizon Drive, Suwanee, not only failed the inspection but also had to close because there was no hot water in the facility.
The restaurant voluntarily closed until hot water was restored and re-opening was approved by the Gwinnett County Health Department.
Points were taken off because an employee handled raw bacon then proceeded to prepare coffee without washing hands, according to the inspection report.
Also, there were no thermometers to take food temperatures, and the person in charge did not know what temperatures food should be cooked to, the inspector said.
Some foods were improperly stored and subject to cross contamination. Raw bacon was on top of ready-to-eat food; uncooked cake batter was over ready-to-eat food; unwashed fruit was over milk and other ready-to-eat food. The items were re-arranged.
Among other code violations, the ice machine had black, slime-like buildup, kitchen floors were dirty and employee items were found throughout the facility.
Crepes Square failed the inspection with a 64/U, dropping from previous scores of 90/A and 100/A.
The restaurant will be re-inspected.
