A five-year old from Clayton County was lucky to escape with just a bruise to his face after firing his father’s service weapon in a Sandy Springs parking garage on Monday.
Sandy Springs police responded to a call at 1 Glendale Parkway at 7:41 a.m. that day from Welkind Saint-Jean of Riverdale, a 30-year-old officer with the Clayton County Police Department.
According to the report, Saint-Jean told the responding officer that while he was parking his car in the garage, his son climbed out of his car seat and into the front passenger seat. As Saint-Jean was getting out of the car, his son reached into the glove compartment, took the gun from the holster and fired a shot.
The bullet from the weapon went through the front windshield and hit the concrete roof of the garage, the police report says. The responding officer found fragments of the bullet laying next to the right side of car, and the shell casing was found in the front passenger seat.
The make and model of the gun and bullets were not listed in the report.
According to the report, the child had a small bruise on his right cheek.
Detectives from Clayton County also responded to the scene, as did Deputy Chief Gina Hawkins.
Spokespersons from the Clayton County Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Sandy Springs police said the case is still active and pending investigation.
