Gov. Nathan Deal said next year’s budget will include $2.9 million to equip Clayton State University’s new state-of-the art science building. The governor made the promise this week before a large gathering of Clayton State faculty, staff, students as well as state and local dignitaries attending the groundbreaking for the $19.8 million facility. The money Deal pledged will be used to buy scientific equipment for the building’s 16 labs. The ceremony was on the site of the new building in the parking lot across from the university’s Laboratory Annex Building. Deal said the 64,600 square-foot facility is central to helping Georgia maintain its top ranking as a state with a good business climate because it will produce graduates in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics or STEM disciplines. Clayton State has grown from 4,675 students in 2001 to more than 7,200 students today.
