Talk about a ruff morning — a Labrador retriever puppy had to be rescued Sunday after falling down a 75-foot well in Cherokee County.

Cherokee County fire department spokesman Tim Cavender said crews responded to 1900 Fletcher Drive at about 7 a.m. Sunday, finding a 2- or 3-month-old yellow lab at the bottom of a well. A man who lived at the home told authorities that the dog’s apparent partner-in-crime — a black lab it had shown up with the day before — had drawn his attention to well.

Firefighters built a tripod over the hole and lowered firefighter Brendan O’Brian into the hole. Within a few minutes, O’Brian was raised back up with the puppy in tow.

The dog was given oxygen and “appeared to be OK,” Cavender said.

It was taken to the Cherokee County Animal Shelter, but the homeowner told firefighters he’d be interested in adopting both dogs if their owner isn’t found.
