Consumer Reports said 32,405 subscribers participated in its 2014 survey, rating restaurants on food quality and freshness, value, politeness, speed of service and dining area cleanliness. The restaurants then received an overall score.

The Checkers restaurant inside the Mall of Georgia failed its latest health inspection, Gwinnett County records show.

The Buford burger stand earned a 59/U on the Oct. 8 inspection, down from 94/A on its past two inspections, which took place in May 2018 and August 2017. “Active managerial control measures” did not meet county standards, including precautions against food contamination and using time to control food quality, the report says.

Unwashed tomatoes were stored over ready-to-eat cheese in a walk-in cooler, and time-controlled cheese was not time-stamped, according to the report. Hot dogs were not heated to a proper temperature, and the restaurant had to bring them to a higher heat, according to the report.

Food was stored under a leak in a walk-in freezer, and containers for seasonings and water were not labeled, the report says. One employee was seen wearing jewelry, which is a health code violation, and other employees stored cell phones and purses on a food prep table, the report says.

"The Checkers in the Mall of Georgia is a franchised location, and the franchisee is taking the health department report seriously,” said Kim Francis, a spokesperson for Checkers. “Most of the issues were fixed immediately, with a few additional repairs scheduled for today. The entire team has been retrained to deliver on our high standards of safety and guest service."

Re-inspections are typically conducted within 10 days of a failure.
