Butterfly House opens June 18 in Cobb County

An exhibit focusing on all things butterflies will open June 18 in Cobb County.

A Garden With Wings, a pollinator exhibit, will open to the public at Smith-Gilbert Gardens in Kennesaw. The exhibit will also include a pollinator garden showcasing a collection of annuals, perennials and shrubs that attract and support bumblebees, butterflies and hummingbirds.

Visitors will also have a chance to tour the 1,500-square-foot Butterfly House, which will include hundreds of butterflies and their host plants that grow naturally in the Kennesaw area.

The exhibit is supported by garden members and the Smith-Gilbert Gardens Foundation, a nonprofit that raises money for the gardens. The cost to attend is included in the gardens’ admission fee, and the exhibit runs through Labor Day.

Mark Wolfe, Smith-Gilbert Gardens environmental education and communications manager, said the exhibit’s opening date was moved up to coincide with National Pollinator Week. The week runs June 17-23, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

“The butterfly house is a fun conversation starter to talk about the importance of pollinator conservation, the amazing process of metamorphosis, and even home weed and pest control,” Wolfe said. “Each visitor approaches the exhibit a bit differently, and each has a different takeaway from the experience. It’s a great thing to be a part of.”

Smith-Gilbert Gardens at 2382 Pine Mountain Road is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. For more information, visit its website
