Brookhaven is the latest local city to partner with a popular home camera company, allowing police access to posts residents make on an app.

City residents can download the Neighbors app from Ring and use it as a neighborhood watch by sharing posts, receiving notifications and posting videos taken from their door cameras.

The Ring products can take live video of a home’s porch and have sometimes captured crimes such as package thefts and break-ins.

Dunwoody announced last week it was the first city in the state to partner with Ring. DeKalb County has approved a similar partnership for its police department.

Officers and investigators will have access to the footage users upload.

“The Brookhaven Police Department is fully committed (to) public safety,” Brookhaven police Chief Gary Yandura said in a statement. “Partnering with Ring using the Neighbors app, will give officers a technological advantage when investigating crimes.”

The Ring devices have generated privacy concerns, though, with some worrying the cameras could lead to unnecessary surveillance.
