About 20 percent of Fayette County residents will be 75 or older by 2050, according to Atlanta Regional Commission estimates.

By the year 2050, about one in every five residents of Fayette County will be 75 years old or older, according to population projections from the Atlanta Regional Commission.

The southside community, which already has metro Atlanta's oldest population, will grow by 37,000 residents by mid-century for a total citizenry of 147,000, the ARC projects.

In addition to having an older population, Fayette County also will be less white in the year 2050. The percentage of white residents will decline from 63 percent in 2015 to 39 percent in 2050.

The changes in Fayette come as the 21-county Atlanta region is expected to add 2.9 million people by 2050, pushing the total population to 8.6 million.
