On March 26, a Lawrenceville citizen who wanted to remain completely anonymous donated enough reusable face masks to make it possible for each police officer to have two masks.

As of March 31, the CDC was still advising anyone who is sick to wear a face mask when around other people and before entering a healthcare provider’s office. Individuals who are not sick do not need to wear a face mask unless they are caring for someone who is sick (and they are not able to wear a face mask). Face masks may be in short supply and they should be saved for caregivers.

In guidance for use of face masks in healthcare settings when there is limited supply, the CDC states that use of homemade masks (e.g., bandana, scarf) for care of patients with COVID-19 is a last resort.

“However, homemade masks are not considered personal protection equipment, since their capability to protect healthcare professionals is unknown. Caution should be exercised when considering this option. Homemade masks should ideally be used in combination with a face shield that covers the entire front (that extends to the chin or below) and sides of the face,” cautioned the CDC.
