Northern DeKalb County could grow more citylike in the coming years under a proposal making its way through the Legislature.
House Bill 428 would allow Dunwoody to annex up to four miles from its boundary of the unincorporated areas to its south, mostly along Ashford-Dunwoody Road. Doing so could add thousands of people to DeKalb’s largest city and bring two parks -- Blackburn and Murphey Candler -- to the community.
But the bill's sponsor, Rep. Mike Jacobs, R-Atlanta, said he is equally open to allowing Chamblee annex that same area to its borders, creating a new city of Brookhaven or having some combination of the three.
“This is meant to start the conversation and put one possibility on the table,” Jacobs said.
Residents in the area, also called North Brookhaven, have expressed an interest in joining a city or becoming their own for years. Some had wanted to join with Huntley Hills when it became part of Chamblee earlier this year.
The proposal is before the House Governmental Affairs Committee for review and is not expected to come to a full vote any time soon.
