dispute over park land scuttled plans to build a library south of Stone Mountain.

The DeKalb County Board of Commissioners voted 7-0 on Tuesday to redirect $4 million that had been planned for the library at Wade Walker Park. The money will instead be spent to renovate the Covington Library and the Sue Kellogg Library in Stone Mountain.

The Wade Walker Library was a priority of Commissioner Sharon Barnes Sutton before she lost re-election last year.

She was defeated by Commissioner Steve Bradshaw, who says the library couldn't be justified. The proposed library site at Wade Walker Park is reserved for outdoor use, and it would have cost millions of dollars more than the $4 million previously allocated, he said.

“Why would we want to go down this path?” Bradshaw said. “I am committed to making policy decisions that enhance the quality of life for citizens in District 4.”
