U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution Monday evening to rename a Riverdale Post Office after Riverdale police Maj Greg Barney who was killed earlier this year during a drug raid.
The bill now goes to the Senate for consideration and if passed there would be signed by Pres. Obama within 10 days of the senate’s passage.
If all goes well, the Post Office at 6691 Church St. in Riverdale could be renamed the “Major Gregory E. Barney Post Office Building” by July, according to Chandra Harris, a spokesman for Georgia Congressman David Scott, sponsor of House Resolution 4747 which passed.
Barney was killed Feb. 11 - the 25th anniversary of his time on the Riverdale Police force - as he was assisting Clayton police in issuing a no-knock warrant.
Congressman David Scott, the sponsor of the resolution, as well as Georgia Reps. Jody Hice and Lynn Westmoreland spoke on the House floor Monday in support of the resolution.
“He gave his life trying to bring justice to drug dealers,” Hice said.
Barney, a U.S. Navy veteran, is survived by his wife, Lisa, and twin 15-year-old sons, Gregory and Robert.
