The center of Hurricane Idalia is crossing into Georgia at Category 1 strength with maximum sustained winds of 90 mph.

The storm was located about 15 miles south-southeast of Valdosta and 165 southwest of Savannah at 11 a.m., according to the latest advisory from the National Hurricane Center. Idalia is expected to maintain hurricane strength as it moves across southeast Georgia on Wednesday, bringing heavy rain, destructive wind and the potential for storm surge along the coast.

“On the forecast track, the center of Idalia will move across southeastern Georgia today, near the coast of South Carolina tonight, and just offshore the coast of southern North Carolina on Thursday,” the advisory said. “Idalia is then expected to move east-southeastward over the western Atlantic on Friday.”

Brandon Long, left, owner of Bull River Marina, checks an app on his phone for the latest tracks of Hurricane Idalia and Franklin as one of his boat owners leaves the marina Wednesday in Savannah. Hurricane Idalia hit the gulf coast of Florida as a Category 3 storm and is expected to bring wind and rain.

In 2022, Georgia Power projected its winter peak electricity demand would grow by about 400 megawatts by 2031. Since then, Georgia has experienced a boom of data centers, which require a large load of electricty to run, and Georgia Power's recent forecast shows peak demand growing by 20 times the 400-megawatt estimate from just three years ago.
