The second floor gallery at the High Museum became a way-station for space-age road rockets Monday, as the first of 17 concept cars arrived for a show called “Dream Cars.”

The exhibit, which opens May 21, will display extreme examples of automotive design from the early 1930s to the 21st century.

On Monday the Firebird 1, a 1953 flight of fancy, was wheeled into place by a crew of handlers. Adorned with fins, wings and a rear stabilizer, it appeared to awaiting clearance for takeoff.

It was followed by a bubble-topped 1959 Cadillac Cyclone and the 1951 GM Le Sabre XP-8. The remainder of the vehicles will be shipped during the next week or so.

The “Dream Cars” show runs through September.
