An employee of a Belk store in Forsyth County was dragged about 150 feet by a vehicle belonging to a fleeing shoplifting suspect, authorities said.

The incident happened Monday in Cumming after a Snellville woman allegedly left the store with merchandise she had shoplifted, according to the incident report from the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office.

The Belk employee saw the suspect, identified as Sheila Maureen Britt, place items in her cart inside shopping bags that she had brought with her, according to the report. The suspect then grabbed more merchandise and headed out the door, where the worker made contact with her.

At that point, someone driving a Honda Civic arrived outside the store, and the passenger-side door opened, according to the report. The driver’s identity is unknown.

Britt tried to get in the car, but the worker blocked the attempt and told Britt he was going to call police, according to the report.

When the worker turned to move, Britt jumped in the car, and the worker was dragged when he tried to pull her out of the car, the report said. The distance was verified by video surveillance.

Forsyth deputies identified Britt’s car from the license plate, and they later contacted her, according to the report. But she never complied with their request to meet.

Britt was charged with shoplifting, and the driver would face charges of shoplifting and aggravated assault for dragging the worker in the parking lot, according to the report.

The worker’s condition is not known.
