A Glynn County police officer who specializes in spotting impaired drivers was arrested Monday afternoon and charged with driving under the influence.
Kevin Yarborough, 38, was pulled over on Cate Road just after 4:40 p.m. when a Georgia State Patrol trooper saw his white Dodge Charger swerve out of the lane and turn without signaling, according to the GSP incident report.
The trooper wrote that he could smell the strong odor of alcohol before reaching the trunk and that Yarborough, who identified himself as a Glynn County police officer, admitted to taking a shot of pineapple vodka before leaving his house.
After failing his field sobriety test, Yarborough told the trooper he had been drinking for an hour or an hour-and-a-half and that he had two shots in the last 30 to 45 minutes, according to the report.
A breath analysis registered the officer’s blood alcohol level at .116 percent, above the legal limit of 0.08.
Yarborough was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol less safe and failure to maintain lane, Glynn County jail records show.
"I commend the Georgia State Patrol for their efforts in combating drunk driving in our community," Glynn County Police Chief John Powell told Savannah’s WJCL. "If Officer Yarborough was indeed driving under the influence, he will be dealt with accordingly.”
In 2017, Yarborough was named the Drug Recognition Expert of the Year by the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, according to the Glynn County Police Department’s Facebook page.
He was released from jail Monday after posting a $1,690 bond, records show.
Multiple calls to the police department about the officer’s employment status went unreturned Tuesday.
