Polk County jailer accused of giving inmates marijuana, tobacco

A Polk County jailer was arrested Friday after allegedly being found at the facility with contraband including marijuana and tobacco, according to local news reports.

The Polk County Standard Journal reported that Whitney Ryan Ashmore, 39, of Cedartown was arrested after being found at the jail with "marijuana, several packs of tobacco, a can of dip and rolling papers." Polk County Chief Jailer Al Sharp reportedly told the newspaper that Ashmore "apparently gave some contraband to inmates."

Sharp told the paper Saturday that Ashmore had been fired and was being held without bond on charges including violation of oath by public officer, “giving inmates liquor, drugs, weapons, etc., without consent of warden,” and trading with inmates without consent of warden or superintendent.

Attempts to contact the Polk County Sheriff’s Office were not immediately successful Sunday.

Polk County is about 50 miles northwest of Atlanta.
