A shooting in Atlanta’s Pittsburgh community Saturday evening left one man dead, Atlanta police said.
The man, identified by the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office as 23-year-old Stephen Murphy, died at the scene of a shooting in the 1000-block of Garibaldi Street near Pittman Park. Police told Channel 2 Action that the man identified as Murphy knew his assailant, and the gunman ran off before authorities arrived.
Murphy’s body was found in a wooded area of a vacant lot. Witnesses at the scene were able to identify a suspect, police said, but information about that person was not immediately available.
The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office said Sunday an autopsy on Murphy had not been completed.
Channel 2 reported the shooting happened near a birthday celebration in the park, and police hope the large crowd at the time of the shooting will aid in the investigation.
“A lot of people were out that’s why we were asking people if they heard or saw anything,” Atlanta police Lt. Charles Hampton told the station.
