The Cobb County Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is accepting applications for initial training classes in August.

Sessions will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays, Aug. 8, 15 and 22, at the Cobb County Emergency Operations Center, 140 North Marietta Parkway, Marietta.

Participants must attend all three sessions to complete the program and be at least 16. The CERT program trains people to be better prepared to respond to emergency situations in their neighborhoods or workplaces.

If professional first responders are unavailable, CERT members can assist with basic disaster response skills such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and disaster medical operations.

CERT members also can give critical support to first responders, provide immediate assistance to victims, organize spontaneous volunteers at a disaster site and help with nonemergency projects that help improve community safety.
