Q: When we were kids, my brother and I loved the animated clay figures Gumby and Pokey. We were big fans of the television show. As a surprise for his birthday, I would love to send him the bendable figures if they're still made. I think he would enjoy a little nostalgia on his birthday. Thank you. — Deb Moore, Atlanta
A: Created in the 1950s by film student and clay animation pioneer, Art Clokey, Gumby and his orange pony pal, Pokey, have been on and off television screens for decades. And, yes, the rubbery, flexible figures are still available. You’ll find 6-inch Gumby and Pokey sold separately for $5.93 each at Richard’s Variety Store, 2347 Peachtree Road, Atlanta, 404-237-1412. In case you want to join the Gumby fan club, or to find more information on Clokey, Gumby and Pokey, check out www.gumbyworld.com.
Q: I moved away from the South many years ago and have recently returned. I am very disappointed that I can no longer find Double Cola in stores. Is it still being made and, if so, is it available in the Atlanta area? Thank you for your help. — R. Johnson, Tucker
A: There’s a place locally that’s pretty much a haven for those seeking hard to find or nostalgic sodas. It recently started stocking Double Cola, which originated in Chattanooga. You’ll find Double Cola in 12-ounce glass bottles for $1.99 each at David’s Produce and Country Store, 3561 Lavista Road, Decatur, 404-325-0709.
Q: Why is it when you find a perfect lipstick (or whatever), the company stops making it or distributing it? I am at the end of my Revlon Love That Pink 575 lipstick. I have looked in every display of Revlon lipstick and can't find it, or even any color close to this beautiful pink. I don't know what their color system is, but it certainly isn't designed to make finding a replacement easy. Can you help? — Ginny Nickoloff, email
A: Hello, Revlon 575, I’m 706, 24K Orange. While I understand your frustration at not finding your favorite color, the good news is that it’s not discontinued. Love That Pink is still around even if it’s not always stocked at each Revlon display. I go through the same sense of panic with Revlon 706, which is why I grab a couple when I can — just in case. You can find Revlon Moon Drops in your favorite pink shade for $7.99 at Bed Bath and Beyond, 1 Buckhead Loop Road, Atlanta, 404-869-0457. And if you want to order it online, it’s available from www.amazon.com for $6.49.
Q: I would like to locate a coin dispenser or changer like the ones that early street car conductors wore around their waists. I don't mind ordering it. Thank you. — Garnell Smith, Powder Springs
A: You certainly bring back a blast from the proverbial past, Garnell. I remember these around the waists of midway workers at fairs and carnivals. These days, some restaurant suppliers stock them but, unfortunately, none of the ones I spoke with carried these coin changers, nor could they order them. And while I found them on the manufacturer’s website, I also located the same brand for about half the price through www.amazon.com. Search under Industrial and Scientific, then enter McGill steel 4-barrel belt coin changer. You’ll find the steel money changer that dispenses quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies. It’s priced at $15.01.
