Q: I need help finding the best detangling products for long hair. I’m in tears! Can you suggest one, and where to find it? — Lisa Prince, Atlanta
A: Lisa, I’m not sure what type of long hair you have, but I’ve got a couple of products for you to try, as well as a few tips that should help with your tangled dilemma. First, before washing your hair, make sure that it’s already tangle free. And while washing your hair, note how most stylists do it — smoothly. Don’t bunch your hair in a massive ball using circular motions, which will weave your tresses into a nest. Instead, wash your roots and scalp using vertical motions, and gently rub the ends between your hands. When you use a conditioner, make sure to leave it on for a few minutes. You can apply the conditioner, then twist your hair and clip it up while you shave your legs. Now, here’s the trick that should make a noticeable difference with those tangles: get a plastic comb with thick, wide teeth. You can find one in any drugstore; look for the kind with a curved handle so that you can hang it in the shower. Before you rinse out the conditioner, carefully comb your hair, starting at the ends. Start rinsing a bit and combing. You’ll find that it’s much easier to comb out the tangles when your hair is slick with the conditioner. Rinse your hair without scrunching it, and when the conditioner is out, gently squeeze the water from your hair and wrap it in a towel or, my preference, one of those super absorbent microfiber twisty hair towels. They don’t feel as if you’re balancing a jug of water on your head, and they really help to dry your hair more quickly. After you remove the towel, your hair should be nearly tangle free, but this is where you can try one of the two detanglers I suggest. Not your Mother’s Knotty to Nice conditioning detangler can be used on wet or dry hair. Spray it on, then comb your hair, starting at the ends. Make sure you use enough of the product to allow it to work, but not too much to weigh down your hair. A 6-ounce spray costs $5.99. Shea Moisture raw shea butter extra moisture detangler is a bit more heavy duty, and ideal for curly hair. A little of this leave-in conditioner goes a long way. An 8-ounce bottle sells for $11.99. Both are available at Ulta Beauty, 3495 Buckhead Loop, Atlanta, 404-266-3559.

Q: My brother-in-law is hard to buy for, but he loves root beer. It would be fun to give him a root beer sampler box for his birthday. Do you know of places in Atlanta where I could buy bottles of various craft root beers? I don’t mind visiting several stores — that’s part of the fun! Thank you. — Virginia Murray, Atlanta
A: Virginia, this is going to be easy and fun for you. Go to David’s Produce and Country Store, 3561 Lavista Road, Decatur, 404-325-0709. You’re going to encounter so many unusual brands of root beer that it’ll make you dizzy, and impress your brother-in-law. You should find everything you need right there.
