Q: I need a person, not a product, so I hope you can help. My husband’s family has a slant-top desk and secretary made in the 1700s. I would like to appraise it for insurance purposes. The person would need to come to our home. Thank you for your help. Nancy Pennock, Milton

A: Nancy, it’s important that you use an appraiser who is accredited and one who meets ethical and professional standards. Betsy Dorminy, an accredited senior appraiser with the American Society of Appraisers, has been in business for 30 years as a personal property appraiser valuing antique furnishings, art, collectibles and silver. She also works with banks and insurance companies, and will come to your home to look at your desk. You can check out her website at www.betsydorminyappraisals.com or call the office at 404-226-7967.

Q: I am looking for some good cheddar cheese curds. This is the curd prior to being placed in molds for aging. They are to be firm and squeaky to the touch. Kroger has them but are hard and crumbly and not good. Good cheese curds come from Wisconsin or upper New York state or Iowa, where most cheese of quality is manufactured. I would appreciate if you could find a good local source that I might purchase from. Thanking you in advance. John McCauslan, email

A: Truthfully, Georgia isn’t really a bastion for cheese making, so those fresh squeaky curds aren’t quite as popular or as easy to find as they might be in cheese country. However, there is a reliable local source for cheese curds. You’ll find the curds — white and yellow — at DeKalb Farmers Market, 3000 E. Ponce de Leon, Decatur, 404-377-6400. They’re usually packaged in clear plastic deli containers and located with most of the domestic cheeses, directly across from the artisan cheese case.

Q: I’m at my wit’s end trying to find a single-egg microwave egg cooker. I used to buy them at DeKalb Farmers Market, but the store doesn’t carry them any longer. It’s shaped like an egg, is made of hard blue plastic and screws apart in the middle. Works great to make poach eggs. Thanks. Frank Andre, Jr., Fayetteville

A: I found Egpro Micro Egg cooker that looked almost exactly like the one you sketched in your request. Unfortunately, that single-egg cooker is no longer available, which explains why you can’t find it. However, I did find a similar product that you can purchase locally. Check out Boiley Microwave Egg Boiler, which also is shaped like an egg, is made of hard plastic and twists open and closed in the middle. Unlike Egpro, Boiley features a whimsical design that includes little feet, a face, and a bit of an orange moustache. You’ll find this cooker for $3.93 at Richard’s Variety Store, 2347 Peachtree Road, Atlanta, 404-237-1412. If you want to take a look at it online before heading to the store, go to www.richardsvarietystore.com.

You can stop looking

Some readers have noticed that Betty Crocker Fiber One apple cinnamon muffin mix is no longer on store shelves. According to the folks at General Mills, the apple cinnamon muffin mix was discontinued a few years ago. For a while, you could find them on Amazon, where you had to order multiple boxes, but even that supply has now dried up.
