Care and protection of personal collections is the focus of the April 30 seminar offered by the Georgia Genealogical Society.

The presenters will be Tina Seetoo and Christine Wiseman, professional archivists and conservators, who will speak on four topics: saving family treasures (including all kinds of family items and their handling and storage), protecting memories (the care of family photographs, including digital photos), digital imaging basics (how to scan personal collections and the formats to save them in to preserve them) and disaster preparedness and recovery for personal collections (the basics of emergency planning for your personal materials, including effects from fire, water and mold).

A fifth session will have participants assisted in completing their own disaster plan, a pocket response plan, including emergency contacts and local resources.

The seminar will run 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Athens-Clarke County Library, 2025 Baxter St., Athens. It's free, but registration is required and must be postmarked by April 22 to the Georgia Genealogical Society, P.O. Box 550247, Atlanta, GA 30355-2747. The registration form can be downloaded at gagensociety.org and mailed. Contact Laura Carter at gagensocprograms@gmail.com or 706-369-9420 for information (no registration by phone).

Note: Georgia Public Library Services will give 5 continuing education credits.

DeKalb deeds published

A. Bruce Pruitt has published his third volume of abstracts of DeKalb County deeds, “Abstracts of Deeds: DeKalb County, GA, Books O & P (1854-1857).”

He expertly abstracts the vital information in each deed, including dates, parties involved, land description and price. There is a full personal name index followed by an index to places named therein, such as churches, roads and land lot numbers.

While the author does great abstracting, he omits his name, any purchasing information, mailing address or website within.

It is an important work, documenting the records of the metro Atlanta area. The softcover book is $19.53 postpaid from A.B. Pruitt, P.O. Box 815, Whitakers, NC 27891.
