An Austin, Texas, man grieved the loss of his pet to cancer through his own pet's perspective.
On Jan. 28, John Pointer wrote an essay, called "Yesterday was weird…," that recounts his dog's last few days of life and posted it to his Facebook page.
"We went to see some doctors, and since then I've heard a lot of words like 'cardiomyopathy,' 'cancer' and 'kidney failure.' All I know is that sometimes I feel okay, and sometimes, you know, I just don't," he wrote.
The post, originally written as a caption under an updated profile picture in November, has resonated with people and has been shared over 120,000 times.
It was reposted as a note Feb. 2.
Pointer, 42, wrote the letter after the loss of his pet, a white boxer named Benny, which he had owned since 2007.
"It was the ultimate form of denial," Pointer told Today.com. "I thought, I can't handle what I'm feeling right now ... so what might this all have been like for him?"
The post details how Pointer stayed with Benny while he was euthanized.
"I could tell my person was both relieved and very, very sad. I love him so much. I looked at that me-shaped shell, and I looked at him. I think he was sad about that shell."
"I hadn't even really had space to grieve myself, but it helped me be present in the first, hardest days after Benny died," Pointer said. "I tried to show up and just try to give people what they needed."
