A former teacher for the American School for the Deaf decided to take on a real challenge when she retired. She taught her cats sign language.

Kim Silva said the idea was also prompted by the adoption of a deaf cat named Bambi.

The deaf cat and two of Silva’s other cats, Bobcat and Thomasina, have picked up the signs quite easily. Silva’s senior cat, Bear, was not interested in the sign language lessons.

The cats seem to understand and respond to an array of signs, including those for come, sit, stay, shake, high five, play and dance, according to the Huffington Post report.

Silva says Bobcat has become much more interactive with the human members of his family after she taught him signs.

Silva hopes that her story will encourage others to adopt deaf cats and teach them sign language.
