A Great Pyrenees dog believed to be about 8 years old has a new home a week after being found curled up with her dead owner, retired police officer David Tapley, and his wife Brenda, after a tornado swept through Van, Texas.

Nicholas Pet Haven  took in the dog and five other pets who survived the tornado and said the other animals were doing well and would also be up for adoption soon.

The Great Pyrenees showed signs of trauma when she arrived at the shelter — raw, bruised skin, head trauma, and a burst eardrum — and immediately caught the attention of shelter volunteer Michelle Schockley, who took her home and renamed her Emma.

Shockley said she and her mother Jo decided to make Emma’s birthday the day she survived, as a way to also “honor the lives of her owners that perished in the tornado.”
