Walmart is joining Target by launching a car seat recycling program that will run through September 30.  Customers can trade in their car seats at participating Walmart stores and receive a $30 gift card that can be used “in-store or online to buy items for your baby,” Walmart said.

Not all stores are participating, and the gift card will expire at the end of September.

The program is designed to bring awareness to car seat safety and will make traditionally nonrecyclable car seats recyclable.

"Safety — especially car seat safety —is a top priority for Walmart's Baby department, so we wanted to use our size and scale to create an event that offered unprecedented access to trade in an outgrown car seat for a gift card — perfect for using on your baby's next car seat," Melody Richards, vice president of Walmart Baby, said in a statement.

By teaming up with waste management company Terracycle, the program is expected to divert the plastic equivalent of approximately 35 million water bottles from landfills by making car seats recyclable.
