A father in New York is being praised for teaching his children how to invest their allowance money, but it comes in the form of a Humans of New York Facebook post.
Humans of New York is a photograph series created by Brandon Stanton, who takes photos of people in the city and includes a caption that contains a quote by one of the subjects in the photo.
One photo has been shared over 82,000 times for its caption in which Steven I. Weiss teaches his two sons, Ethan and Alex, how to allocate their allowance money.
"Every week I get one dollar for allowance. Then I get to choose the section where I put my dollar. There are four sections: spend, save, donate, and invest," one of the sons said. "If I put a dollar in the 'invest section,' my parents give me two extra pennies at the end of every month. I've only used my 'spend section' twice! I have way over $10 in my 'invest section.' I used to have more but I took some money out and put it in my 'donate section.' We used to it to buy food for people who don't have much money in their 'spend section.'"
Stanton purposely does not attribute quoted in any of his photos, but whomever said it, it shows a creative and practical way to teach children how to save money.
Commenters praised Weiss in addition to sharing their own methods for teaching children how to save money, similar to Weiss; technique.
"Clever lessons being taught about the value of money and the value of kindness," Pearl Adler Saban said.
"What a wonderful gesture! Kudos to these parents for teaching their children compassion for others," Ashley Caitlin Hyshka wrote.
Weiss was gracious, thanking commenters and Stanton for featuring his children in the post. He praised his wife and his children's mother, Rachel Feinerman, who he said is "equally responsible for everything lovely about our children."
"It's a great Father's Day present," he said of the post.
