Matthew Wesley Williams has been named interim president of Interdenominational Theological Center.

Williams will fill the seat vacated by current President Edward L. Wheeler when he retires on July 31.

The full board of trustees will ratify the appointment later this summer and Williams will begin his transition on July 10.

Williams, who received a master’s of divinity degree from ITC in 2004,  is currently serving as vice president resident of Strategic Initiatives for the Forum for Theological Exploration in Atlanta.

He is also a graduate of Florida A&M University and is an ordained elder in the Presbyterian Church.

“Matt is uniquely gifted to effectively lead ITC during this period of transition,” said Wheeler in a press statement. “ He is a strategic thinker and has exceptional organizational expertise. He knows theological education and the challenges the enterprise faces.”

Williams said he was eager to begin the “next chapter” of ITC’s life and legacy.”

“ This is the beginning of an effort to co-create the ITC our communities need,” he said in a statement. “ This is village work.”
