Thanksgiving is just days away and Hosea Feed the Hungry & Homeless is still in need of food and donations to help feed thousands of needy metro Atlantans.
Elizabeth Omilami, president and CEO, vowed its signature event would still go on but said there is a need for many items including turkeys, hams, dressing, cranberry sauce, garlic, onions, rice school supplies and monetary donations.
This year’s event will be held Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. p.m. at the Georgia World Congress Center.
The money will be used to install showers for people coming for help and to help set up hair stylists and barbers. Participants at one of the organization’s major events, will also have health screenings, clothes and school supplies among other things.
“I’m still running into hundreds of people who don’t see a doctor unless they’re at our event,” Omilami said. “I keep seeing families who don’t have a Thanksgiving feast unless they come to ours.”
Last year the organization fed about 11,000 people and Omilami expects that number to remain steady. There are requests for more than 4,700 meals to be delivered to seniors and others who can’t come to the GWCC.
She said the economy has forced one major supplier of turkeys to scale back dramatically. A supplier of pre-packaged dressing closed its community affairs department. Additionally, individuals donations are lower than in previous years, she said.
