SUCCESS STORY / Terry Shaw, 60: From 255 pounds to 160 pounds
Former weight: 255 pounds
Current weight: 160 pounds
Pounds lost: 95
Height: 5 feet 7 inches
Age: 60
How long he's kept it off: He has maintained his weight loss since 2012. "I started in 2011," Shaw says. "I reached my original goal (to lose) 80 pounds in October of 2012 and (I lost) another 15 pounds by late November of 2012."
Personal life: "I live in Avondale Estates with my beautiful wife, Nancy, and our little dog, Callie. I work as a security officer for Allied Barton."
Turning point: "I was tired of being tired and simply wanted to do something with my health," he says. "What inspired me was my wife, she got the ball rolling. My wife suggested that we should join a gym, so I joined … to lose weight and get healthy."
Diet plan: "My wife makes delicious and healthy meals, and I started paying better attention to what I was eating and in moderation," he says. "I started laying off the sweets, heavy breads and starches and started eating more vegetables, fruits, fish and chicken … without depriving myself of an occasional treat. … When I munch now, I munch on nuts and fruits or granola bars."
Exercise routine: "I started slowly doing 20 minutes of cardio workouts at high intensity levels and built up to 30 minutes along with light bar weights included," he says. "I also did some jogging, usually 2 to 3 miles a few times a week. (At first I worked) out five to six days a week doing elliptical, high tension and StairMaster with some weight lifting, pushups, crunches — I now work out four days a week."
Biggest challenge: "Laying off the sweets and overeating," he says. "As far as the exercise goes, it was making myself work out on days I didn't want to and staying determined and consistent. … My secret to success was to just stay determined with encouragement from my wife, Nancy, and great friends and just staying determined to keep going to the gym and staying disciplined."
How life has changed: "I am much more energetic and sleep better, too," he says. "I am still staying 160 pounds. I am not having to kill myself, nothing like that. I went from a 44-inch waist to a 32-inch waist. I don't have any problems with my knees and ankles — stairs used to bother me a little. I can do 60 pushups and I am 60 years old. … My blood pressure is good and my endurance is great. I am much more health conscious now and I am really enjoying life to its fullest." He adds it's important to splurge to keep staying on track. "My tip to others is to just give it your best and give yourself a well-deserved cheat day once a week as my wife and I get together with our friends and eat whatever we want."
