A plain-faced model named Reyna is transformed from a soldier in the Mexican Revolution to a modern-day millennial with the help of hairstylists and makeup artists, all in less than one minute. This miracle transformation is the subject of the latest video in Cut.com's series "100 Years of Beauty".

The series, which focuses on one nationality or race per video, highlights ten distinct hairstyle and makeup looks from the past 100 years, “pausing” once each decade. While the looks themselves are interesting to see, the most fascinating aspect of the video series are the political and social influences that dictate changes in the women’s appearance as the years pass on.

The most obvious example of the worldly influences seen in the videos can be found in the 100 Years of Beauty- Episode 4: Korea video. The video turns into a split screen halfway through, simultaneously showcasing beauty norms in North and South Korea from 1950 to today. The stark contrast between the conservative North Korean looks and the westernized South Korean looks humanize the long strife between the two countries.

Seeing a woman change hairstyles 10 times over the course of a minute may not be the most obvious way to educate young people about world history, but the video series is doing just that. Hundreds of comments on the 100 Years of Beauty-Episode 3: Iran video both ask and answer the question of why the model begins the video with her head covered in the 1910s, loses the head covering (or hijab) in the 1930s, and gains back the hijab in the 1980s. Discussions focus on the 1979 Islamic Revolution, the impact of the religion on women, and how Iran became westernized.
