There's no room at the Plains Inn … but if you hurry, you can still get into this Saturday's painting class with Jimmy Carter and Paula Deen.

"Painting, Paula and a President" is a one-of-a-kind fundraiser for two local nonprofits: Plains Better Hometown, which maintains the hometown of the country's 39th president, and Friends of Jimmy Carter National Historic Site, which helps support the National Park Service's sites and programs in town. It includes an all-day painting class at the Plains Community Center taught by renowned Atlanta area artist James Richards (who recently spent time in Plains and painted a portrait of the former president) and a "Saturday Night Sleepover" in the Plains Inn featuring Deen (no word on if she's cooking Sunday morning breakfast).

The $2,000 sleepover package, which also includes a dinner that Richards, Deen and Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter will all be at, is completely sold out. But limited availability remains for two slightly more modestly priced packages ($1,000 and $1,500), which includes the dinner and overnight accomodations in the gracious Historic Windsor Hotel in nearby Americus.

The painting class also was essentially full, but a few people have had to drop out due to medical or family reasons, said Plains Better Hometown coordinator Ruth Sanders. The cost for the 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. class, which includes breakfast and lunch, is $500 (you’ll also need to bring your own paints and canvas).
