Local Historian Gene Ramsay will walk you through a tour of the Norcross City Cemetery at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 9 at 343 S. Cemetery St.
And you'll hear more than ghost stories on this free tour.
Ramsay will share stories highlighting Norcross' past including the rags-to-riches-to-rags tale of Edward Buchanan who began life as an orphan in Norcross. Buchanan manufactured the first car south of the Mason-Dixon Line in 1908 called the "NorX." Some say the reason the company failed is because no one knew how to pronounce the name.
Learn all about Wyatt Davenport, a collegiate baseball star killed in a tragic accident on the diamond. Davenport played baseball for Georgia Military College in 1920. He received a skull fracture during a game with Georgia Tech that turned fatal a week later.
Then there is W. D. Burtchaell, an Irish immigrant and railroad construction engineer. Burtchaell was a civil war veteran imprisoned at Johnson Island, Ohio, between 1864-65.
Plus, stories about Tom Ed and Lala Summerour's civic contributions will give you insight on the city today.
Norcross is the second oldest city in Gwinnett and was the first to be placed on the Register of Historic Places. The Norcross City Cemetery dates back to the 1800s and Historian Ramsay's tales make a great way to learn more about this historic Gwinnett city.
