How many Krispy Kreme doughnuts can someone consume in six minutes? That's what a doughnut eating contest at Republic Social House aimed to find out.
The restaurant on Memorial Drive hosted the contest as a way to celebrate broken new year's resolutions and a new menu at the popular eatery.
The contest featured three two-minute rounds. The top eight eaters from the first round advanced to the second round. The top two eaters from the second round battled for the title.
And when the glaze settled, Dale Boone won the contest with Rasheed Manson finishing second.
"My strategy was to make it smaller and compact, so I could swallow easier," Manson told Nelson's News on wsbtv.com. "I was just thinking about the prize."
The winner of the contest won $200. Second place was good for $75 and third place took home $30 in house cash.
Manson, or the "Machine" as he was dubbed, had more to think about than just the prize, he had a competitor to think about, too. Boone was one of the contestants, too. Boone participates in 175 eating competitions a year, has been to Coney Island for the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest on July 4 seven times and has won every eating competition Nelson's News has attended in Atlanta over the last few years.
Boone's strategy began hours before the contest.
"I had breakfast," Boone said. "I had a good old Southern breakfast of steak biscuits. That's one thing that I know about sugars is always try to get more protein in you to counteract the sugar molecules."
Manson devoured eight doughnuts in the first round, 10 in the second round and seven in the finals. At 200 calories a doughnut and 12 grams of fat each, that's 5,000 calories and 300 grams of fat for six minutes worth of eating.
"I don't want to even think about the calories because I'm a exercise science major so I try and work on my body," Manson said.
Boone destroyed a dozen in the first round, a dozen in the second round and for consistency, another dozen in the championship round. And in each round, he stopped eating well before the time ended.
"You've got to keep your eye on the competitors and see what they're up to," Boone said. "Three dozen did it today. You've got to understand how sugar reacts on the body. Glad it was doughnuts and Krispy Kremes are the best."
