The cover shows a classic image of the family from “The Cosby Show,” underneath shattered glass centered on Bill Cosby’s character, Cliff Huxtable.

The reaction to the eye-catching cover has been decidedly mixed. Supporters feel it is a strong image to capture the struggles of black families, as well as addressing the issue of the sexual assault allegations being filed against Cosby. Critics find the image offensive and disrespectful, claiming Ebony is politicizing a sensitive issue.

Ebony editor-in-chief Kierna Mayo told Colorlines that the cover was designed to be thought-provoking and a conversation starter, but it was not intended to offend anyone.
