Atlanta-based artist Fahamu Pecou surprised passerby last week in the Sweet Auburn Historic district when he gave them a wave and a shout from about 70-feet in the air.
It took five days for Pecou to complete the mural from atop a sky lift at King Memorial Marta station. The mural is the first of four planned public art projects for En Route -- a collaboration between MARTA, WonderRoot, Fulton County Arts & Culture, and The TransFormation Alliance.
Here is a look at the finished mural:
Pecou is the lead artist ( supporting artists include Joe Dreher and Fabian Williams) for three additional murals to appear at the Oakland City and H.E. Holmes MARTA stations in Westview and West End respectively. The fourth location has yet to be determined.
The En Route project which is funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, Ford Foundation, Wells Fargo, Georgia Council for the Arts, and the Atlanta Regional Commission was created to reflect and enhance the lives of neighborhood residents and MARTA users and promote a shared viewpoint in the communities.
The murals are the culmination of year-long process of community engagement in which MARTA and partner agencies met with community members to discuss their desires for mass transit and beyond.
Pecou attended the meetings and listened to input from the community which he then incorporated into his work.
Expect to see the additional projects unveiled throughout the year.
