After a long search, Star 94 has found its newest late-night DJ in its existing stable of jocks: Tim Orff.
Orff, who worked several years on Dave FM as a night and morning host, joined Star 94 earlier this year doing fill-in work on weekends.
"We hired Orff as a part-time DJ a few months ago and within a few weeks it became evident that he's a perfect fit for the sound of Star 94," said Program Director Scott Lindy in a press release. "Orff understands our target audience, has a monster work ethic and will help Star 94 on-air and many other areas of our operation."
Star 94 has been on a major upswing since Lindy took over last fall and is now pulling in its best ratings in years.
He starts tonight from 7 p.m. to midnight. Star's two primary competitors, B98.5 and Q100, use syndicated jocks at night: B98.5 has Delilah and Q100 has Billy Bush.
Orff replaces Darik Kristofer, who left in March after three years and quickly found an afternoon job in Washington D.C. at Fresh 94.7, which is very similar to Star 94.
I had been doing a lot of freelance work around town since I was let go from Dave, mostly video editing for internet news, but for the most part, I was trying to get back on the air as soon as possible.
Orff said he’s been trying to get back on air ever since he was let go in mid-2009. “My first priority was to stay in Atlanta,” he wrote to me via Facebook. “It’s my home and it’s where I love to be. There were talks with a couple of other radio stations around town that did not come into fruition but it didn’t stop me from trying to attain my goal of getting back on the air. I also had some talks with a couple of stations in San Francisco, but those didn’t pan out.”
Going without a steady gig for two years was a financial struggle but he made it through, he said: “Had to give up a lot of guilty pleasures, but I made it through with a ton of help from my fiancée and family.”
His goals for the show, he said, are simple: “Show up, deliver and make radio as enjoyable as possible for the listener. Atlanta has a very unique listenership that I think separates it from other big markets and that’s what I love about the town. Star94 is a heritage station and has always brought excellent music and content to the city…I look forward to continuing that and making the experience for the listener the best it can be.”
Rachel Logan, who had filled in the past few months, will return to part-time/fill-in duty.
