Day 15, Thursday, is shaping up to be a big day for House Bill 170, the transportation funding plan that is causing so much heartburn for city and school system officials. The bill will be up for debate in the House Transportation Committee at 2 p.m.
What happens there is likely to show just how difficult a road the bill, sponsored by state Rep. Jay Roberts, R-Ocilla, has ahead. The Association County Commissioners of Georgia has endorsed it, but Grover Norquist and the Sierra Club are now opposed.
Lawmakers will have had a night's sleep to think over Gov. Nathan Deal's school rescue plan, and we expect to hear more from them on Thursday. School boards, parents and advocacy groups will be eager to chime in, too.
The House and Senate will convene at 10 a.m. Three bills are on the House calendar: H.B. 52, which deals with parenting plans in court cases; H.B. 65, which requires certain boards of education and charter schools to hold at least two public budget hearings; and H.B. 91, which eliminates the Georgia graduation test.
The Senate will take up S.R. 7 and S.B. 8, state Sen. Renee Unterman's anti sex-trafficking legislation.
