Report: Marvel will cast first openly gay superhero

We've grown accustomed to franchise fatigue over the past few years, where once sure bets like Transformers and Pirates of the Carribean have cratered at the domestic box office.

Marvel is making plans to diversify its cast of characters, and reportedly that effort includes finding its first openly gay superhero.

Last year, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige discussed introducing a new, LGBTQ character during the press coverage for “Ant-Man and The Wasp,” and fans might me him soon.

According to That Hashtag Show, a pop culture site, the studio is seeking a male actor, between the ages of 30 and 49, who "physically looks like a superhero." While casting directors are open to all ethnicities, they prefer the part to go to an openly gay actor.

The role is reportedly for the 2020 release “The Eternals,” and it would mark the first time Marvel has featured an openly gay male as a lead. Marvel has not confirmed the report the identity of the character, but many fans speculate he will have a major presence in the film alongside the other expected leads, such as Sersi, Ikaris and Piper.

Filming for “The Eternals” will reportedly begin in September in the United Kingdom and last through January 2020.
