There was a huge police presence in Marietta's Church/Cherokee historic district Wednesday night/Thursday morning as officers and their K-9 companions tracked a suspect who had eluded authorities. The suspect is now once again in custody after a search that lasted several hours.

About 10:30 p.m. Wednesday an officer told neighbors on Sessions Street, about halfway between WellStar Kennestone Hospital and the Marietta Square, that a suspect, in handcuffs, had fled police custody.

Shortly after midnight the suspect was taken into custody again, according to several neighbors who witnessed the arrest near Campbell Hill Street. Here's a photo and update one area resident posted:

The suspect evidently had knocked on the door of a house in the area asking to use the phone. That encounter alerted authorities to his whereabouts; the arrest followed shortly thereafter.

The Marietta Police Department's public information officer hasn't yet responded to requests seeking official details. We'll post updates as they're available.

Here's the scene from my porch during the evening. A little nerve-wracking.
