Radio host and pundit Erick Erickson , a prominent figure in GOP politics who has become "a voice — perhaps the voice — of Republicans working to derail a Donald Trump presidential nomination" as a recent AJC profile observed, has just revealed a serious diagnosis. "Over the course of the past few weeks my lungs have been filling with blood clots," he said in an open letter posted online. "It is rather sobering to have doctors tell you that you should be dead."

Erickson, who also has served as a Fox News contributor, was born in Louisiana and spent most of his early years in Dubai, where his dad was an oil worker, returning to America in his teen years. He began his legal, then political career after Mercer University. He served on the Macon City Council for a time and began blogging about conservative politics on RedState.com; he now blogs at The Resurgent, where he posted details of his dire medical condition.
In 2009, Erickson held the first of what became annual RedState gatherings, attracting fewer than 200 people. Last year's event drew more than 1,000 and made national news when Erickson banned Trump over Trump's comments about Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly.
