Second Self Beer Co. is set to debut its first series of wild beers on Saturday with several releases that were brewed and fermented with both cultured and cultivated wild yeast strains sourced from around the brewery on Atlanta’s Westside.
Dubbed “Beers Gone Wild!,” tickets for the release party at the tasting room are $5 and available on the Second Self website .
The full lineup will include:
Barn Out Back, Chocolate porter fermented with Brett Lambicus and Saison yeast blend (7% ABV)
The Valley Was Set Ablaze, Blonde ale fermented with raspberries and a Brett Lambicus/Saison yeast blend (6% ABV)
Damn, I Shot Marvin in the Face! - Blonde ale fermented with two types of Brett (Brux and Lambicus), Saison yeast, raspberries and blackberries (6% ABV)
Ancient Demons Beckon Forth - Started with Second Self's finished Citrus IPA, then finished in Four Roses Bourbon barrels with Brett Brux (8% ABV)
The Rapture Will Be Televised - Started with Second Self's finished Olde Oyl, then finished with Brett Brux in a “wet” ASW Rye Barrel with dark sweet cherries (13% ABV)
Thirteen Knots - 100% Brett Fermented Russian Imperial Stout (13% ABV)
Going forward, some of the beers will be available in the tasting room only, while others will be on draft at a limited number of beer bars.
But one more new release, Havana Night, will be in the tasting room this weekend, too, and in distribution by the end of the month. And in honor of that, it’s this week’s Beer Pick.
Havana Night Guava Berliner Weisse

According to Second Self co-founder, Jason Santamaria, Havana Night is a guava-flavored Berliner Weisse that the brewery has been tinkering with for a while.
“Growing up in a Cuban family, I've always wanted to work with guava and finally got it right and I'm in love this beer,” Santamaria says. “It has a big aroma of Guava and a nice body for being as low ABV as it is (4.6-percent). There is just enough tartness to balance the sweet aroma. I think this will be an amazing beer for the hotter months.”
An early canned sample I tried proved true to Santamaria’s tasting notes, showing off a hazy light lemony color, with guava notes in both the aroma and flavor, and a refreshing rush of lactic-fruity-sharpness, but no bitterness.
I’d enjoy putting Havana Night up against Cuban classics, such as a Medianoche sandwich, black beans and rice, and guava shells with cream cheese for dessert.
