More than 20 residents lost their homes Thursday after a fire destroyed a DeKalb County apartment on one of the coldest days of the year so far.

The early morning fire damaged nine apartments at the Oak Tree Villas in the 3400 block of Kensington Road, according to the American Red Cross of Georgia.

DeKalb firefighters fought the blaze from the air and ground, and residents were able to escape without injuries, Channel 2 Action News reported.

Investigators are working to find out what sparked the blaze.

Red Cross workers are providing emergency needs such as food and lodging, agency spokeswoman Divina Mims Puckett said.

“Red Cross caseworkers will continue to work with additional families in the days ahead to help them get back on their feet and connect them with additional recovery resources available to them in the community,” Mims Puckett said.

Currently, it is 15 degrees, but it feels like it is zero, according to Channel 2.
