How bad will it get?

That’s the question Atlantans will be asking themselves all week long as they ponder the coming weather.

There will be rain, no doubt. But how much, where, and whether there will be accompanying hail, lightning or damaging winds remains to be seen. And that uncertainty is likely to last until the weekend.

“This is not done after today,” warned Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Karen Minton.

The stormy weather is the product of a tropical air mass sitting over the area, mixed with low pressure out West, said Minton. That’s bringing up loads of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico.

The expected result is scattered showers and thunderstorms that started in metro Atlanta on Monday afternoon and were expected to continue into the evening, when they will dissipate.

The storms could “even border on severe,” Minton said, but they won’t blanket the metro area. Instead, they will be scattered around in what’s looks to be a hit or miss affair.

The Gwinnett County Department of Fire And Emgergency Services reported some weather-related issues early Monday evening. A tree fell on a home in the 4000 block of Wrexham Drive in Snellville, causing extensive damage to the corner of the house, Capt. Tommy Rutledge said. Lightning appears to have started a fire at a home in the 2700 block of Storybrook Court in Grayson, he said. No injuries were reported in either incident.

Tuesday morning’s drive in to work doesn’t look like it will present any major problems, with the storms again waiting until afternoon to arrive.

Sudden, heavy rain Sunday combined with storm drains clogging to cause flooding in Atlanta and the temporary shutdown of the Downtown Connector in both directions. Georgia Department of Transportation crews cleared the debris from the drains to get traffic flowing in 40 minutes Sunday, and GDOT officials say they are staying on top of the potential for more clogs given the forecast.

Temperatures likely will be the least of weather concerns this week. Highs are expected to sit in the lower 80s every day, but it will be sticky and steamy.
