Drought conditions haven’t changed much since early July.

Most of metro Atlanta was still in a severe drought Friday, and parts of Atlanta, northwest and northeast Georgia were still in an extreme drought, according to the National Drought Mitigation Center.

“What has changed is that the rains that we’ve had recently in the last week have helped us shrink this area off to northeast Georgia, so it’s not quite as large of an extreme drought,” Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Karen Minton said. “But it’s still there, and it’s not going to go away anytime soon.”

When Lake Lanier, metro Atlanta's main water source, is full, water stands at 1,071 feet. Water stood at 1066.98 feet on Friday, according to the National Weather Service.
