Nick Faldo — Sir Nick, to proper Anglophiles — was named winner of the Payne Stewart Award during an announcement Tuesday in advance of this week’s Tour Championship.
Faldo, a six-time Majors winner, a CBS and Golf Channel analyst and founder of a grass roots youth tournament circuit known as the Faldo Series, is the 15th Stewart Award winner. It was founded shortly after Stewart’s death in an airplane accident to honor the player who represented the values of character, charity and sportsmanship.
Faldo was in England, where on Tuesday his father, George, died at the age of 88.
In a statement appearing in the family’s hometown newspaper — the Welwyn Hatfield Times — Faldo offered a powerful tribute to his father:
“With an honest sparkle in his eye and story in his heart, he charmed his life’s gallery, one person at a time.
“He was an easy mark for a laugh and an easy mark for a tear, illustrating every day his own simple appreciation for the simplest moments in life.
“That, along with his own signature nod of his head and eternally outstretched hand to greet a visitor or a friend, will forever define the many memories I will hold close.
“Thanks, Dad, for everything. We took the most amazing journey together.”
