Free agent running back DeAngelo Williams thinks next week’s NFL owners’ meeting in New York should include some minority players and military veterans to add perspective to conversation about NFL protests.
“Hey (NFL Commissioner Goodell) can u please allow some minority players and military vets into this meeting with the owners! Just to add Perspective thanks,” Williams wrote.
Williams, a former first round NFL Draft pick, spent nine seasons with the Carolina Panthers before spending the last two with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell released a statement Tuesday afternoon revealing NFL owners would discuss how to resolve the issue of NFL protests during the next owners meeting.
Goodell’s statement on Tuesday expressed the opinion that players should stand during the national anthem because it’s what the fans “expect out of us.”
Goodell also expressed concern of the NFL fan base being divided further by the protests.
“Everyone involved in the game needs to come together on a path forward to continue to be a force for good within our communities, protect the game and preserve our relationship with the fans throughout the country,” Goodell wrote in the statement. “The NFL is at its best and we ourselves are unified. In that spirit, let’s resolve that next week we will meet this challenge in a unified and positive way.”
Goodell’s statement did not mention any information about consulting players or military veterans about how to best take action.
