In an interview that aired Tuesday night on HBO's "Real Sports," colorful TNT sideline reporter Craig Sager reveals that the acute myeloid leukemia he has battled for the last two years is no longer in remission.
The 64-year-old Atlanta resident confirms that doctors informed him in February that he was no longer in remission and the diagnosis is not good.
In a clip from the interview (above), Sager says doctors told him he could have as little as three to six months to live.
On Wednesday, Sager released a statement vowing he remains confident in his treatment:
"I'm grateful to HBO for telling my story and I'd like to thank everyone for their ongoing support. I have acute myeloid leukemia, an aggressive type of cancer. The typical prognosis is 3-6 months to live, but I would like to stress that is for a patient who is not receiving treatment. Fortunately, I am receiving the best treatment in the world and I remain fully confident I will win this battle.
"Again, I would like to thank everyone for your generosity and encouragement. I sincerely appreciate it and it means so much to me and my family. I look forward to continuing my work on the sidelines for Turner Sports."
Sager told HBO's Bernard Goldberg "I have to maintain my strength, so I can go through this."
Sager, who has been a sports commentator for more than four decades and is known for his garish wardrobe, missed the covering the 2014 NBA season as he underwent treatment for the cancer. He returned to much fanfare last season.
